IPAF Courses

IPAF is the leading powered access training scheme and has been developed by industry professionals. The PAL card (Powered Access Licence) is the most widely held and recognised proof of training for platform operators and more than 50,000 operators are trained each year and proves that an operator has been trained to an international standard.

Training is always carried out by qualified IPAF instructors who are also experienced platform operators. Courses are a mix of classroom theory and practical, hands-on instruction.  The course content includes MEWP safety awareness, a theory session and test, MEWP introduction and familiarisation, a practical test, course evaluation and a question and answer session.

When training has been successfully completed, the operator will receive a safety guide, a log book and their Powered Access Licence and certificate.

PASMA Courses

PASMA is the lead trade association for the mobile access tower industry. Representing the interests of manufacturers, suppliers, specifiers and users, it provides and oversees the industry standard training scheme and is a major publisher of safety-related knowledge, information and guidance.

At Warren Access, we will also keep a log of what training your company has done and when. Shortly before it is due for renewal, we will contact you again to see if you would like to renew the training thus ensuring the candidate’s card does not expire.

The joke with the staff is that he now only works part-time 5 days a week from 7.15 a.m. until 6 p.m!

This year marks his 55th anniversary of being in the access industry.    

Derek’s son Graeme was involved in setting up the business in 1993 and Derek then managed the business on his own for the next 12 years until Graeme and his wife, Michelle, joined him in 2005 when he was thinking about retiring.

Derek started with two van mounted platforms and now there is an impressive fleet of 24 vehicles including lorry mounted platforms and a tracked access Spiderlift.

Over the years, Derek has built up a wonderful rapport with his customers and there can be no doubt that his work ethic of always putting the customer first has enormously contributed to the success of the company.

The deal completed on 28th February and both companies are delighted.  It follows the merger of APS with IPS last year now known as the IAPS Group.

This acquisition provides Warren Access with a location in the South. Their Newcastle depot currently specialises in vehicle mounted platforms, tracked platforms and is an accredited IPAF Training Centre.

Height for Hire which was acquired by APS in late 2010, following the retirement of founder Malcolm Brown, runs a fleet of scissors, booms and vehicle mounts.

The Huntingdon training operation is an accredited centre for IPAF, PASMA, ALLMI and CAP, offering a full suite of training to its customers.

The vast range of access equipment and training courses will now be available in both depots.  Warren Access Upton will continue to be based at the same location in Upton, alongside the APS sales operation.

Following the arrival of our machine on Friday 1st February, no time was wasted arranging the first hire and the machine went straight out on hire the following morning Saturday 2nd February and proved to be a great success.

This is the most significant addition to our fleet yet and we were delighted to take delivery of it on Friday 1st February. Wasting no time at all, the machine went straight out on hire on Saturday morning with a window cleaning company and proved to be a great success.

This machine is available for hire now with one of our experienced IPAF qualified operators and can be hired for half day hires as well as full day hires.

This platform will be a huge asset to our fleet as it offers a further 6 metres maximum working height and a staggering 21 metres of maximum outreach.

All of this technology has been cleverly designed onto a 7.5 tonne chassis, therefore not requiring an HGV licence and the working cage load is 320kgs.

It allows businesses to carry out work that would have previously required a much larger machine. It is uncomplicated in its design and its zero tail swing means that it always stays within the footprint of the vehicle.

So, how does the process work once the gifts are donated?

The gifts are distributed very quickly once received.  The support staff come along to Head Office where the items are sorted and stored and make their selection from the gifts, as they are all aware of the needs of each family they work with.  They then deliver them direct to their families in time for Christmas.

It makes such a difference as the support staff all know the families individually and know what gifts will really make Christmas special. It is hard to believe that there are still children today who could wake up on Christmas morning with little or nothing and that many parents have to make decisions between feeding their family, or heating the family home.

Children North East is the North East regions oldest independent children’s charity founded on the banks of the Tyne in 1891 – they are the region’s very own children’s charity. Today Children North East works with children, young people and their parents who are living in poverty or whose lives are disadvantaged because of family misfortune.  Divorce or separation, eviction, redundancy, long term unemployment, victims of crime, imprisonment, long-term ill health, depression or post-traumatic stress – the effects on children run deep.

A little bit about Daft as a Brush Cancer Care Trust…

The original charitable trust was set up and established in 1989 by Brian Burnie. The financial funding for the charitable trusts work was to be provided from the group of commercial trading companies that Brian owned.

In 2010 the name of the charitable trust was changed to Daft as a Brush is run by a small team of dedicated full time paid staff based at the Hood Street Centre and many other volunteers who are passionate about helping and assisting cancer patients in their journey to recovery.

This beautiful building is used today as offices but during its 130 years of existence it has also served as:

• a nonconformist chapel
• a community centre
• a  Danish seamen’s church

The word “Beth-el” is Hebrew for “House of God.  In the late 19th century regular trade between Newcastle and Danish ports resulted in cargoes of butter, eggs and fresh meat arriving at the mouth of the Ouseburn, and the Sailors’ Bethel was the ideal place for the Danish seamen to stay overnight whilst their cargo was unloaded.

Our 20m Multitel is a perfect tool for this type of work as it is very lightweight and has an impressive working outreach of 9.65m. It has a two man cage open cage making it very easy and safe to work from the basket.

The work was carried out by local maintenance company A W Harrison.

The Cyrenians Fareshare North East helps alleviate food poverty in the North East of England. They stop good food going to waste and make it available to vulnerable people whose basic needs are not being met.

All the photos below were taken at FareShare’s depot in Newburn and they are hoping to generate some awareness of the iCan campaign.

The shoot came about because the staff (in the north east and as far south as Lincoln) at Barclays collected and donated over 12,000 cans to the iCan campaign.

“Thanks to Warren Access for the donation of your cherry picker today. Without your help the photoshoot would have been just 4 guys in suits holding cans of food! Our access platforms were put to good use once againto assist with the PA and Lighting along the seafront between Seaburn and Roker.

Our Transit mounted 13m Versalift platforms are an ideal tool for such jobs, with a maximum working height of 13m and outreach of 7.3m.

They are also within the 3.5 tonne GVW, and are therefore a perfect machine for self-drive hire where drivers have passed their test after 1997.

The 24th Sunderland Airshow 2012 took place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July.

The show attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, who gathered along the city’s seafront to enjoy the weekend’s air and ground entertainment.

Household names from the aeronautical world, including the Red Arrows appeared at the event on the Seaburn and Roker seafronts.

• The Typhoon (Eurofighter)
• The Battle of Britain flypast
• The Black Cats Display Team and many more

The incredible aerobatics and impressive planes certainly got hearts racing across the weekend.  There was even some amazing night flying by the SWIP Twister Duo Display Team on the Friday evening.

Her Majesty The Queen officially opened the second Tyne Tunnel with the Duke of Edinburgh as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.  In addition to this, the day’s events also included visits to Sunderland, Gateshead Stadium, Newcastle, Durham Castle and finally on to Stockton-on-Tees to officially open a white water course at Tees Barrage.

The Queen said she was “delighted” to revisit the Tyne Tunnel, 45 years after she opened the original transport link in 1967, and she also started a wheelchair race through the tunnel.

The Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Mrs. Linda Arkley, was also presented to Her Majesty The Queen and a tree was planted on the south side of the Tyne Tunnel.  The Queen then also delivered a speech on the North side in which she noted that the project had brought together the communities either side of the Tyne, and had transformed the lives of thousands of motorists. Before leaving the Tyne Tunnels site The Queen was presented with a posy of flowers.

Warren Access were approached by media company Big TV who are based in Bradford, to assist with the transmission between the north and south side of the tunnel on to large screens.  Big TV is a company dedicated to affordable first class service to event organisers. Warren Access were hired yesterday with their 27m Multitel Platform to assist workmen in covering up the four Sports Direct adverts around the ground using large white sheets.

Part of the Olympic agreement means that venues must cover up all commercial advertising and branding including ticket stubs, pitch-side hoardings and even bathroom taps! Televisions also need to have their logos covered up.

Newcastle is currently being ‘dressed’ for the Olympic occasion with light signs, street lamp signs and coloured flags in preparation for the thousands of visitors that are expected.

The Greater London Authority has given a grant of £270,000 to Newcastle to fund the work in the area, including the installation of the giant Olympic rings on the Tyne Bridge.

Teams such as Brazil, Mexico and Spain will be playing at the Newcastle United ground.

Our 18m Oil & Steel Platform has recently been donated again for the on-going floodlight maintenance.

Ryton are currently running 3 adult teams. Their 1st team has an average age of 24 & most senior players are under 30 yrs old.

With 6 youth sides and 130 players between 6-18, the U17′s have capped off a great season, doing the double by winning their League and the Durham U17′s Cup.

As rugby is their primary aim – Ryton Rugby Club are always on the lookout for new players of all ages so if you have played before, want to come back or are new to the game you will be made most welcome. Their commitment is to improve your fitness and technical skills.

To help achieve this aim – over 30 of their coaches hold a First for Sport L1 award, with 8 further coaches qualified to L2.

With an emphasis on safety, their volunteers are CRB checked to RFU enhanced status and the facility is fenced off to ensure there are no unwanted surprises on the training and playing surfaces. This season they started a U7′s team and are recruiting at all ages for next season including U7’s & U14’s.

On Sunday 1st July 2012 the club was awarded the RFU Accreditation – the first in Durham and one of handful in England at this time. The certificate was awarded by the Durham County RFU President – Mike Riby.

The Club Accreditation scheme is based upon the six Key Drivers identified as crucial to a strong club:

• Retaining & Developing Players
• Recruiting New Players
• Recruiting & Retaining High Quality Coaches, Volunteers & Referee
• Effective & Efficient Facilities
• Effective & Efficient Management and Governance
• Integration with the Local Community

Each of these Key Drivers, together with the Core Values of the game, is represented within the Club Accreditation scheme and together they represent the component parts of a strong, sustainable club.

To ensure they can train and play all through the year, Ryton Rugby Club invest in their playing surfaces and also have to spend money on floodlight replacement and maintenance.

This is made possible by the kind support of sponsors like Warren Access and Pathway Lighting who every year donate their equipment and manpower free of charge to enable key work to be performed.

The floodlights are 12 years old and a 5 year plan has been agreed to ensure all light heads are renovated, electrical wire testing and new bulbs installed as necessary.

The event ran on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th June at Haydock Park, Newton le Willows.

The event is the largest gathering of cranes, access equipment and telehandlers in Europe, and was the sixth and biggest ever.

More than 160 manufacturers or service providers were exhibiting, many launching new products to the market.

It was a very informative couple of days, and it is always very interesting to see the latest products to the market.  The rain held off for most of the time too!

At a recent town council meeting, concern was expressed about the current state of the building which is also a blight on the town’s landscape.

Immediate work is required to prevent the building becoming irreparable.  A number of options are being explored but due to the historical nature of the building the work will take time.

The building was extensively damaged in an arson attack in 2007 and since then has been protected by a metal fence, scaffolding and tarpaulin.

Chartered surveyors needed to carry out an in-depth roof inspection on all sides of the building.  The surrounding area of the property is very over grown and access was difficult to the rear due to the scaffolding at the side of the property.

Our 18m Teupen Spiderlift once again proved to be the ideal tool for the job, and the inspection was successfully carried out to everyones satisfaction.

Arthur Stanley “Stan” Jefferson (16 June 1890 – 23 February 1965) known as Stan Laurel, was an English comic actor, writer and film director, and was famous as the first half of the comedy team Laurel and Hardy.

Laurel began his career in the British music hall from where he took a number of his standard comic devices: the bowler hat, the deep comic gravity, and the nonsensical understatement. His film acting career stretched between 1917 and 1951 and included a starring role in the Academy Award winning film The Music Box (1932).

In 1961, Laurel was given a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award for his pioneering work in comedy. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Blvd.

A large screen was showing the new Wallace and Gromit film and Wallington Hall was among only a handful of National Trust properties chosen to showcase the short film. The one minute short film featured Wallace and Gromit preparing to mark the royal celebrations.

The National Trust were sent costumes for members of staff to wear to promote the event and for photo shoots with families on the day. Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park created a fabulous one-minute short film featuring the haphazard animated duo to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which has already met with royal approval.

As part of the INATIV consortium, we are committed to providing training that ensures drivers are capable of undertaking their duties in an informed manner, focused on safety, economy, and the needs of the company.

So what is Driver CPC?

Driver CPC training is a scheme designed to develop the skills and knowledge of PCV and LGV drivers during their career, and has been developed around EU directive 2003/59.

It was introduced by European Legislation on the 10th September 2008 for D Class licence holders (coach & bus) and on the 10th September 2009 for C Class licence holders (LGV).

It is a legal condition for any professional drivers of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes throughout Europe.

Existing Drivers (with a few exceptions) now have to complete 35 hours periodic training in a 5 year period.

The training must cover the minimum requirements of the legislation on subjects such as road safety; fuel economy; regulation; health & safety; service and logistics.

Who is affected by this?

Drivers who obtained driving licences before 1 January 1997, who use C or D licence categories as part of their job are now also required by legislation to undertake CPC Periodic Training to maintain that entitlement.

So when should drivers complete their training?

The first 35 hours of training should be completed before the 10th September 2014. Existing drivers will lose the right to drive if training is not completed by this date. Drivers are obligated to take blocks of training which must be a minimum of 7 hours.

At Warren Access, we recommend spreading the burden of 5 days training over the five year period by completing one 7 hour course per year. The advantages of this are as follows:

SO, WHAT IS PAL AND WHY IS TRAINING FOR OPERATORS NOW SO VITAL?

All PAL Cards are issued exclusively by IPAF, the International Powered Access Federation. They are awarded only to operators who have successfully completed training and assessment by an IPAF-approved training centre.

The PAL Card that they receive is valid for five years. It shows the date of training, and the date when the operator should be retrained. It also specifies the type of equipment which the operator has been trained for.

ABOUT THE COURSES

Training is always carried out by qualified IPAF instructors who themselves, are experienced platform operators. Courses are a mix of classroom theory and practical, hands-on instruction. Generally courses last between one and two days and include a practical and a written test.

Class sizes are kept small and course material is provided. When training has been successfully completed, the operator will receive a safety guide, a log book and a certificate – in addition to their PAL Card.

At Warren Access, we will also keep a log of what training your company has done and when. Shortly before it is due for renewal, we will contact you again to see if you would like to renew the training thus ensuring the candidate’s card does not expire.

IT’S THE LAW

The law requires employees to be properly trained on the equipment they use at work. The PAL Card offers proof that employees have been trained to work at height safely.

Further to a site survey at both sites, we recommended our 18m Teupen Spiderlift as there were many different obstacles to overcome with grassed areas, restricted access points and uneven terrain.

We were delighted to play a part in the ongoing celebrations that were happening up and down the country, and it was great to see hundreds of patriotic locals join in with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Monday night.

Many generations of friends and families congretated at the Lawe Top in South Shields and Mill Lane in Whitburn to witness the beacons being lit in honour of Her Majesty’s 60th anniversary on the throne.

The flames illuminated the sky as part of a national celebration along with a spectacular firework display.  More than 4,000 beacons were set ablaze across the UK’s coastline and the Commonwealth.

The event was sponsored by Isos Housing, a social landlord which has recently developed 12 new affordable homes in Lesbury, known as the Townfoot development.

Local families are now well established in the houses, which were built after a Housing Needs Study identified a lack of affordable housing in the area.

IPAF has launched a safety campaign calling for the proper assessment of ground conditions and the correct use of stabilisers, outriggers and spreader plates.

IPAF’s “Spread the load!” campaign is built around this simple and straightforward message:

- Spreader plates should always be used with boom-type mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) when fully supported on their outriggers.

- Spreader plates should be used with all other MEWPs that have outriggers unless a risk assessment indicates they are not necessary.

Why is this campaign needed?

MEWPs are generally very safe and stable. However, incorrect set-up can cause instability and lead to overturning. This is often the result of inadequate ground assessment, poor selection of spreader plates, or incorrect positioning of outriggers. The ‘Spread the load!’ campaign sets out to give clear and practical guidance on when and how to use spreader plates.

This event was targeted at companies who carry out refurbishment work, and its aim was to provide up to date information on the most important issues specific to refurbishment works.  The topics included:

• “The basics” – tidy sites, decent welfare, etc
• Hand-arm vibration
• Plus asbestos awareness training and risk assessment workshops!

It was a great day and very informative for all involved.  There were around 35 exhibitors and organisers, and nearly 200 pre-booked visitorsthroughout the day attending the various scheduled workshops that were taking place.

We were exhibiting our latest Leo18GT Tracked Spiderlift machine and discussing the benefits of its use for indoor and outdoor jobs. Some of its key features are:

• Just 780mm wide for single doorway access
• Full height and reach with 200kgs load
• Quick detach basket system
• AC mains electric motor for quiet indoor use

Here is a little more information about the charity…

Children North East is a vibrant and forward thinking regional children’s charity based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The charity began way back in 1891 as the Poor Children’s Holiday Association (PCHA) when its remit was to take the poor children from the slums of Newcastle and Gateshead on a trip to the clean fresh air of the seaside. Over the years the work of the charity changed from these early seaside trips.

It went on to include training schools for boys and girls, night shelters for street children, a children’s sanatorium for consumptive children and children’s homes for children who, for one reason or another, could no longer live at home with their families.

120 years later Children North East is still working hard in the community to combat the effects of poverty, neglect and disadvantage on children, young people and families. The services offered today are very different from those of the past and they will continue to change to meet the needs and demands of the 21st century.

Children North East’s services are designed to support children, young people and their families to reach their full potential. We aim to support vulnerable people through difficult times and to counter the effects of life’s inequalities.

What is classed as ‘working at height’?

A place is ‘at height’ if a person could be injured falling from it, even if it is at or below ground level.

So, why use an access platform?

Did you know that the average number of people that die each year at work falling from ladders is 12, and over 1200 suffer major injuries.  Ladders remain the most common agent involved and account for more than a quarter of all falls from height.

In 2008/09 there were 35 fatalities, 4654 major injuries and a further 7065 injuries that caused the injured person to be off work for over 3 days or more, due to a fall from height.

Access platforms can provide a safe way of working at height as they allow you to reach the task quickly, easily and more importantly safely.

What are the benefits of using access platforms vs. ladders or scaffolding?

Access platforms give you a cost effective, easy and safe solution to working at height.  Here are some points to consider when deciding how to carry out your job.

Accordingly to HSE guidelines, you should only use a ladder:

• in one position for a maximum of 30 minutes

• for ‘light work’ – they are not suitable for strenuous or heavy work

• if you are carrying less than 10kg (a bucket of something) up the ladder

• where you can maintain three points of contact (hands and feet) at the working position

This is not always feasible when carrying out maintenance work on properties.  Scaffolding is a safer solution to a ladder, however:

• it can be time consuming and expensive to erect

• there are potential security issues

• there is a risk of unauthorised individuals climbing it and falling

• there can be a risk of theft from properties which could lead to subsequent property damage (for example, lead theft from roofs)

In both scenarios, using an access platform allows you to be put accurately and safely into position whilst having the peace of mind that you are also securely harnessed in to the basket.

What type of access platforms and training can Warren Access supply?

Our fleet consists of Van Mounted, Lorry Mounted and Tracked Access Platforms. All of our operators are IPAF qualified and have many years of experience.  We also provide self-drive hire for customers who hold the IPAF qualification.

Thank you to all our customers, special guests and exhibitors who attended our Open Day event on Wednesday 12th October.  Despite the poor weather conditions, we had a fantastic turnout through the day with around 90 people attending overall.

We were also very priviledged to have the Mayors of both North Tyneside and Gateshead at the open day to showcase the new state of the art technology.  We were delighted to demonstrate the versatility of the Spider to North Tyneside’s Mayor, Linda Arkley and Gateshead’s Mayor Joe Mitchinson on how the Spider can access places where conventional equipment won’t fit. Multitel Pagliero celebrated its 100th anniversary over this weekend with a spectacular gala dinner and open days at its Manta Headquarters. Over 500 guests attended the dinner from all over Europe.  There were two other UK based access companies there as well as Warren Access.

Multitel were exhibiting 25 different models from their range, with their biggest machine the MJ750… a 75m machine!

The weather could have been kinder to us, but the sun was shining on Saturday!  There was some intersting entertainment over the two days, including a climbing wall and axe throwing!

We exhibited our 27m Multitel Platform which is ideal for arbor work.  Here is a testimonial from one of customers who has put the machine to the test… “The 27m machine is an absolutely fantastic piece of kit, great for larger takedowns. It has a great outreach, definitely makes a hard job easier. We will hire this again and recommend it to anyone needing lift and reach but make sure you’ve got a head for heights!!!!”

The alarm was raised on Friday morning after the fire broke out at around 6am at the Tyneside Foyer, in Bath Lane in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Eight fire appliances from Newcastle South, Gateshead East, Newcastle West and Newcastle East Community Fire Stations attended, including an Aerial Ladder Platform and a Command Unit.

Later that afternoon once the fire had been safely extinguished, Warren Access were called by Access Construction http://www.accessconstruction.co.uk/ who required a hydraulic platform  to assist with boarding up the blown out windows at the property which can be clearly seen in the photo to the left. 

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the blast and everyone was accounted for but the building was very badly damaged.

The 27m Multitel Platform was used for the job, which has an impressive maximum outreach of 13 metres.  Warren Access now have 4 Multitel Platforms in their fleet, which compliment their vast van mounted range.
